Synopsis

Donald the apple farmer notices his apples have been nibbled on and catches Chip n' Dale in the act. In the ensuing battle, Donald uses a helicopter to spray them (but they have tiny gas masks). And then he brings in the really heavy artillery.

Positive: Applecore! Baltimore! Who is your friend? ME!
This short subject stars Chip and Dale as they mess with Donald's apples and hijinks ensue. Part of this short was taken and used for footage in a lesser known short film called "Citrus World Presents Donald Duck Citrus Products" in 1965. They recolored the apples to appear as oranges for the short.

Donald Applecore can be found on the DVD releases of Melody Time and Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald Duck Volume 4.

It's always a good mix when it's Donald vs Chip and Dale, as it is here with them in a battle over apples. They just are really fun to watch battle it out, even though in this case I think Donald's pretty much in the right here... that's a whole lot of agricultural product disappearing.

I do wonder if that last gag is what's keeping this from showing up again more recently or it's just Disney's standard thing of not really getting material out there.

What I expected: shenanigans with Donald, Chip, and Dale in an apple orchard
What I got: all that plus exploration of the futility of nuclear warfare

All Disney Features and Shorts Challenge

Why does Donald have Chickens?? Also who gave him access to atomic pills? No one should have access to that kind of power, especially Donald Duck. It was pretty much a generic skit between Donald and Chipmunk duo. This time they fight over apples.

All Disney Features and Shorts in Release Order - a challenge?

    Film #534

While the title and plotting might riff on the ‘Applecore, Baltimore’ kids game, the basic narrative is a typical Chip and Dale story that swaps nuts for apples. It begins with farmer Donald’s plaintive cry of “My apples!” when he realises something is amiss, and it’s probably the most dejected we’ve seen the Duck since the War.

The execution of the short film is far more engaging than the familiar setup might suggest. With Donald’s overalls, slick design and bright colours, it looks sharply contemporary. In fact, it’s structured more like a Looney Tunes cartoon than a traditional Disney joint. Case in point is a sequence where…

Donald's battle with Chip N Dale escalates nicely from a few stolen apples to nuclear explosions. Donald's rage is nicely played and the chipmunks are cute

You all keep your cottagecore and your dreamcore, I have applecore

  • Review by Colin ★★★

Those darn chipmunks are out to ruin the business of a hard working duck again.

Donald runs an apple farm and as he collects them from the tree he notices they've been nibbled on. Chip & Dale are the culprits, the latter he catches. Dale convinces him to follow him to get better apples, only to be given the apple cores. Angered he tries to stop the duo from taking his apples, and retrieves his little helicopter to spray the duo with insect powder. Using gasmasks the attempt fails and they continue with their haul. Donald directly steals the apples back from the duo and drops it in his silo. The duo follow and when retrieves the apples from the silo,…

Was that Chip and Dale in a Donald Duck cartoon? [Included as a bonus short on Melody Time blu-ray.]
